Sandpiles & prophecy
Back in 1988, I began to come across both lay and professional works on self-organized criticality (SOC). This concerned a phenomenon in nature we probably all observed as children, namely how stacking rocks, pebbles, grains of rice or sand, or just about anything goes along smoothly until a “critical point” is reached in which the whole thing collapses (I often did the “stacking game” using small fossils I fished out of huge gravel piles at home construction sites close to the house where my family and I lived in Alexandria, Louisiana in the mid-1960s). A physicist, Dr. Per Bak, and two of his colleagues published a paper in 1987 which gave mathematical form and expression to this phenomenon, which like most successful explanatory works in science spread quickly and was applied to all kinds of “sandpiles” including neuronal networks in the human brain and the societies and civilization we have created. One academic, University of Melbourne professor of archeology, historical & philosophical studies Dr. Louise Hitchcock applied SOC to the collapse of societies and civilization. On 12-29-2020 an article came out titled Unprecedented’ new crisis coming: Covid-19 pandemic could be a warning for civilization – NZ Herald which looks at what lies ahead for us all in 2021 and beyond and includes input from Prof. Hitchcock.
What crossed my mind way back in the 1980s into the 1990s was the way in which many biblical prophetic depictions of the “end of the age” could be explained or made explicable by invoking SOC mechanisms (in whole or part). The advance and convergence of technologies, in particular, struck me as something that would probably play a major role in specific calamitous future events thanks to SOC (So much so that I began supporting Earth First! with respect to its efforts to oppose technology and other innovations that cause more harm than good to animals and ecosystems and by extension people). I shelved this line of thought — put it on the proverbial back burner — but later began to see articles, papers, and events that brought it back “front and center”.
Below you will find links to books and such that touch on the elements that “stack up” or converge in SOC fashion within societies and civilization itself until the “sandpile collapses”. If you examine some of these alongside biblical prophecies contained in the books of Daniel and Revelations (especially), you will find it hard not to conclude things are lining up to usher humankind into the “time of Jacob’s trouble”.
Mind you, I do not believe most Baby Boomers will live to see the worst. Many Orthodox and Messianic rabbis agree that Boomers are not the generation to fear for, but instead, it is likely those that have followed will be around to see the “end of the age” unfold. The one prophecy that was given by Yeshua which once fulfilled will leave no doubt whatsoever “it is at the door” is the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.
